Road safety is important locally, nationally and internationally. Motor vehicle collisions are the leading cause of death and disability in many jurisdictions, with significant economic costs, pain and suffering, and devastating consequences. Over the past decade, Winnipeg has experienced an annual average of 13 fatal and 145 serious injury collisions. In fact, while the number of fatal crashes has declined year on year, the number of injury crashes has increased over the past 20 years. Serious injuries and fatalities on the road are preventable - and Winnipeggers are changing their minds, they no longer tolerate such incidents.

Winnipeg's Strategic Road Safety Action Plan will serve as a roadmap for implementing short-term solutions and long-term investments over the next 3-5 years and beyond in a coordinated fashion. and targeted, to ensure that the City contributes to preventing serious injuries and deaths on our roads.

Here is what we will do as part of the action plan:

· Conduct a current road safety gap assessment in Winnipeg.

· Confirm the long-term vision and define the areas of intervention.

· Develop an achievable action plan to achieve the road safety vision and establish synergy with other City policies, priorities and mandates.

· Identify accessible resources, establish working groups and develop a monitoring and evaluation framework to ensure that the action plan is sustainable and achievable.

The project team will develop the plan based on the opinions heard in conversations with road safety stakeholders and various public consultation sessions, as well as an in-depth statistical and analytical review.

This action plan builds on our past efforts and on the great Destination Zero project : Manitoba Road Safety Plan 2017-2020 ; it will identify opportunities to work with our partners to develop multidisciplinary approaches to make our roads safer through planning, infrastructure, law enforcement and education. Going forward, the action plan will inform and support larger strategic efforts, including the Transportation Master Plan , which will help us plan the next phase of road safety efforts in Winnipeg.
